How to write long but easily readable posts on social media?

By Manuel Maret

When you post content (image, picture, video,…) in social media, you add a few words about it. It can be a single sentence with some hashtags but it can also be an entire paragraph. Paragraphs are more common in Facebook and Instagram, so it’s very important to capitalize on all the post’s potential by making it more dynamic and easily readable. The question is: how to write long but easily readable posts on social media?

Users want the info providing the less effort as possible. That’s why it is recommended to write short posts and avoid an excess of clicks (that’s also the reason One Page websites are a real trend nowadays). Nevertheless, sometimes it’s a difficult task to leave relevant information out of a post just to make it as short as possible.

So if you can’t avoid writing a few lines to explain a piece of content you’re about to publish, here are 3 main rules you should follow :

  • 10 lines maximum (add a link for more info or insert some text in your images or pictures)
  • Divide the post in paragraphs instead of posting a 10-line block
  • Use emojis

Check the difference!

Example without following the 3 rules:

« Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. »

Same example following the 3 rules:

« 🔵 Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book 📘 .

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets 📄 containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. »

Conclusion: I think we will all agree this second example takes less effort to read. So keep in mind the 3 rules you can’t avoid when you write long posts for Facebook or Instagram.
